Chevrolet Releases 2009 Corvette Competition Sport Package

Chevrolet has announced a track-oriented Competition Sport package available on its 1LT and Z06 models.

Aimed at enthusiasts who use their Corvettes to the fullest on closed courses, the Competition Sport package includes the Z51 performance package, a performance exhaust system and a differential cooler to the 1LT and a handful of appearance upgrades to both models.

Saleen reveals future plans for SMS Limited brand

Later this year, SMS will reveal plans for a new 460 Mustang package based on the new 2010 Ford Mustang. While the car is still in the design stages, The Detroit News reports that it will come with a patented SMS Red Butterfly Induction hood over a supercharged V8 engine. Towards the end of the year, or possibly in early 2010, SMS will add a modified Chevrolet Camaro to its lineup.



Instead, the SMS label will be used for a new range of modified muscle cars, based around the new 2009 Dodge Challenger, 2010 Ford Mustang and upcoming 2010 Chevrolet Camaro. Based in Anaheim, California, SMS is currently building the first of its new hotted-up muscle cars, the Dodge Challenger 570 Series.


Starting at $60,000 for a complete car, the SMS prepped Dodge Challenger 570 delivers more than 500hp (373kW) from a highly modified 5.7L V8 engine. Also on offer is a 700hp (522kW) version, which is priced at $70,000.


At the start of last year American performance workshop Saleen announced plans to establish its new SMS Limited brand. The company then rolled out a stunning supercar concept to coincide with the launch of the brand, but unfortunately financial hard times put an end to plans for production of the mid-engined concept.

Car News: Wagoner Heading to Bailout Hearing in Chevy Volt Prototype

The mule will be outfitted with the body of a Chevy Cruze but it will be equipped with the powertrain from the highly anticipated Chevy Volt. GM hopes this will send an important message to members of Capital Hill, stating in essence that a key part of the company's turn around plan will be based on new vehicles that will feature advanced technologies and improved fuel economy.

After last months public relations nightmare where CEO's from the big three took private jets to Washington DC to ask for a 25 billion dollar government loan package, General Motor's CEO Rick Wagoner has decided to forgo the first class accommodations for a Chevy Volt mule.

During GM's presentation the company will showcase the technology behind the Volt in an effort to explain to the Senators that the company's viability will be based on new energy saving technologies. With GM's plan to cut costs and focus on four core brands, the company is hoping Congress will approve their request for $18 billion in government loans.

Car News: Chevy Camaro Gets Full Line of Performance Parts and Accessories

The key word for the Chevy Camaro is heritage. And with this offering by GM's Performance Parts division, the Chevy brand restores a little of the romance that helped make the Camaro one of the icons of American car culture.


The list of tuning options is long and includes both interior and exterior trim kits, from cabin design to classic stripe kits in various colors. What stands out are the rally and hockey stick-style strip options which evoke the past (yet another 70s-referencing design cue) while keeping the contemporary Camaro relevant in the marketplace today simply by its boldness alone.


Also on offer here are some performance goodies for under the hood and beyond. It includes air box and exhaust kits for both the V6 and V8 engines to improve performance and accentuate sound. And the real kicker, a short-throw shifter developed with Hurst with the classic styling of that well-know parts maker.


No details on pricing or performance boosting are available but the pics tell their own story.

New GPiX crossover coupe concept Details

Chevrolet has revealed the all-new GPiX crossover coupe concept at the 25th edition of the Sao Paulo International Auto Show in Brazil today, which the carmaker claims is a preview of a future production model designed specifically for the South American market.


The concept vehicle was developed by General Motors Design in Brazil and features a two-door body with high ground clearance. "It offers the sporty design and versatility necessary for a country with the continental dimensions of Brazil," said Carlos Barba, GM’s design boss for Latin America, Africa and the Middle East.


The name GPiX is a pseudonym for Global Image. "G" for global and "Pix" meaning "picture" or "image." This suggests that the design of the latest concept could be used on other GM models developed in other markets.

Its styling is dominated by the high waistline, oversized grille, LED headlamps, and chunky 17in alloys. The GPiX also features a panoramic glass roof to add a feeling of increased interior space. Inside, there is seating for four and all of these, including the driver’s, can be folded down to create a flat panel.


The instrument panel has a modern design, with easy-to-read digital displays, and there is full connectivity for Bluetooth devices and portable music players.

Car news: Corvette Racing Readies For GT2 Challenge

The start of the 2009 American Le Mans Series will mark the end of an era for Corvette Racing. GM's factory team will focus on its transition to a new GT2 program that will debut in the second half of the season. Program manager Doug Fehan shed some light on the project after last weekend's Monterey Sports Car Championships presented by Patrón.

The team announced plans in September to move from the GT1 class that it has dominated since 2001. Corvette Racing has won eight consecutive team championships, and its drivers have won seven straight titles in the American Le Mans Series. There also is the matter of five victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and the quest for a sixth will be the final race in GT1. more detail. ...

Sao Paulo Auto Show:Chevrolet GPiX Concept Photos Leaked

Here are the first pictures from Chevrolet GPiX. This is the concept car GM has announced when it celebrated its 100 years. It anticipates the project Viva, a project that will give birth to a new family of vehicles, including a hatchback that shall replace Corsa in South American countries. Besides the hatchback, there will also be a sedan, a pick-up truck and possibly a small crossover, such as GPix.

Based on the fourth generation Corsa, also known as Corsa D, Viva will preserve its European brother's dimensions, such as a 2.50 m wheelbase and a 4 m lenght. Engines, at least in Brazil, will be the 1.4-litre Econo.Flex and a 1.8-litre engine, which should be replaced by a new one, since it is not very fuel efficient. We will have more details on the car pretty soon, when Sao Paulo Auto Show opens its doors to the press, next Monday.

Nurburgring: Corvette ZR1 Again Spotted

Yesterday our Autogespot buddies from Holland spotted a brand new Corvette ZR1 at a fast food restaurant just 60 km away from the Nurburgring, just two days after another ZR1 (different license plates) was spotted on the famous German race track being followed by a helicopter. Its just a matter of time now until we get to see the ZR1 set its Ring lap time.

We can only assume that GM is putting their money where their mouth is after the recent comment that the ZR1 can “take the production-car track record at any racetrack”, including the Nürburgring in Germany which was recently lapped in just 7:29 by the Nissan GT-R.

We know what the ZR1 can do at the Papenburg track in pretty much a straight line, namely 205 mph or 330 km/h, but how will it fare on the twisty and turny Nurburgring. Power comes from GM's new LS9 supercharged V8 engine and produces 638 hp / 476 kW with 819 Nm of torque.

The question remains, can the Americans beat the Japanese? And how long until the Europeans reclaim the title on their home turf?

Chevrolet Cobalt XFE

Once again, fuel prices are the topic of the day and different car manufacturers tackle the problem in different ways. Chrysler offers fixed fuel prices for three years, Suzuki gives fuel away for free for three months but Chevrolet simply releases a new model with the segments best fuel economy.

Chevrolet called its new model the Cobalt XFE, which stands for Xtra Fuel Economy, and can be fitted on LS and 1LT coupe and sedan models with manual transmission. The Cobalt CFE uses an EcoTec 2.2 liter DOHC I-4 engine capable of 148 hp and 206 Nm of torque with revised engine calibration, low rolling-resistance tires, new 4.74:1 final drive ratio to achieve 25 mpg (city) and 36 mpg (highway), a 9% increase.

"Cobalt has always been an efficient performer, but the changes with the new XFE elevate it to a leadership position that will appeal to customers who put fuel economy at the top of their new-car priority list," said Ed Peper, Chevrolet general manager.

Corvette ZR1 Annual Production Limited to 2000

In a recent chat on GMnext.com, Corvette ZR1 chief engineer Tadge Juechter revealed what many consumers have already been dreading – annual production of the ZR1 will be limited to just 2000 units. But this must be like sweet music in the ears of the dealers who will surely be celebrating. Even though we expect the price of the ZR1 to stand at around $100,000, the limited production will enable the dealers to charge a good premium on top of that, so don't be surprised to find it turn up on Ebay for twice the recommended retail price.

Hard facts about the ZR1's fuel economy is yet to be reported but Juechter did add "the ZR1 will be the most fuel-efficient 600-hp car you can buy in the world." Although the fuel economy “will be somewhat less than the Z06, and we expect a gas guzzler tax.”

A dying question the world still wants to know about the ZR1 - How fast can it go? Juenchter was quizzed on whether the ZR1 could regain the World Speed Endurance Record. "As you probably saw, we announced the top speed as 205 mph. The ZR1 has also been extremely durable in our testing, so the car certainly has the potential to take the World Speed Endurance Record. However, we are currently focused on a perfect launch and getting the ZR1 into production. We will talk about record attempts later." Juenchter was recently quoted as saying "the ZR1will be able to take the production-car track record at any racetrack," meaning the GT-R ring run of 7 minutes 29 seconds could well be under threat.
