Lamborghini Sets Record Sales in 2008 despite economic turmoil

Lamborghini manufacturer Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A has recorded worldwide growth in sales despite current financial and economic hard times. Global sales in 2008 increased 1% over the year 2007 from 2406 to 2430 units.

Although Lamborghini's biggest world market the US saw a decline of 20.3% representing 741 units sold instead of 930 units in 2007, other markets stepped up to offset that decline.

Opening a Lamborghini press conference with bad techno music and waifish models wearing padded ski jackets and other clothes with the brand's logo emblazoned on it seems appropriate given the image the brand presents: pretentious vapid rich people with fake tans. It does present a fiction, though, as few beautiful people own a Murcielago and even fewer, we imagine, wear Lamborghini clothing.

Original 1965 Lamborghini Miura Turin Salon Chassis found

Originally shown at the 1965 Turin Salon, the Lamborghini Miura show car chassis has been in storage since 1978 on the island nation of Cyprus in the Mediterranean. Uncovered just a month ago sitting in the collection of Marios Kritikos, Cyprus' original Lamborghini dealer, the car has been imported to the U.S. and is undergoing complete restoration to show-car condition.


The car sat, essentially untouched, until December 2008, 43 years since it was displayed in Turin. When it was discovered - complete with the original invoice for the chassis - a pair of Miura specialist collectors helped to get the car to its new owner, and it is currently in the process of being restored to its original condition at the facilities of the Bobileff Motorcar Company in San Diego, California.



The 1965 Turin Salon Miura was Lamborghini's first transverse, mid-mounted V12 engine and is considered by some to be the forefather of all road-going supercars.

Lamborghini Countach Video

The Lamborghini Countach is the poster child for the modern Italian supercar. Literally. If you're of a certain age (and there are a few of us here at Autoblog who are), you probably had a series of Countach posters on your bedroom wall throughout your formative years. Put simply, the Countach was awesome.


Still is, too. The clean-looking LP400 cars, as shown above, are simply gorgeous. Successive updates added visual muscle, but the basic goodness remained the same. (And yes, the 25th Anniversary car's cheese-slicer grates are an abomination.)


Jay Leno, no surprise, has a Countach -- a nicely-worn, red, carbeurated '86 Quattrovalvole that once served as his daily driver and now has 70,000 miles on the clock. Obviously, he loves it, and it's the subject of the Jay Leno's Garage video we've got embedded after the jump.


Jay gives a brief history of his car, which includes nuggets such as his deletion the rear wing because he thought it was stupid. (And really, it is. These cars look so much better without it.) Make sure you watch the whole thing. If you bail early you'll miss the ending. And really, who wants to miss Countach burnouts?


While the Countach is capable of being outperformed by a number of modern, far less exotic sports cars, none of them carry its overwhelming wow factor (or the excellent bold oblique lamborghini logo) Roll up in a Z06 or 911 Turbo today and no one will bat an eyelash, despite their being world-class machines.


Arrive in a Countach, however, and you have an event on your hands. That's just how it is. Always was. Always will be.

Car News: Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 Super Trofeo

Lamborghini has high hopes for their Gallardo Super Trofeo on the racing circuit, especially now that the car has surpassed everyone's expectations by posting lap times faster than any ever recorded with a single-brand trophy race car.


To deal with these challenges Lamborghini allows the Gallardo Super Trofeo to be calibrated depending on the driver and the track it will be driven on. Test driver Giorgio Sanna credits the Gallardo's all-wheel drive system and the aerodynamic downforce with giving the car exceptional handling. The Super Trofeo is the only one-make series in the motorsport world to feature cars with all-wheel drive, giving it an edge up on competitors.


The car was being tested for the first time under simulated race conditions at the Vallelunga Race Track outside Rome by the Lamborghini development team and driven by test driver Giorgio Sanna when the records were broken. It is scheduled to make its first racing debut on May 2, 2009 at Silverstone. The race will last 40 minutes and during that time the driver will not be allowed to change tires, putting higher demands on both the driver and the tires.


A total of 30 Super Trofeo cars will be built and are available to individual enthusiasts and Lamborghini dealer teams, additionally one car will be entered by Lamborghini itself.


Based on the new Gallardo LP 560-4, it is powered by a 5.2-liter V10 with direct injection which produces 419 kW (570 hp). The car also features the e.gear transmission, competition tires from Pirelli, a special racing brake system, additional carbon-fiber exterior bodywork, an ultra-light race seat, a racing steering wheel, and unique racing instrumentation.

Fiero Kit Car Madness: Murcielago replica by ZORBA Design

Production ended in 1988 for the Pontiac Fiero, but that hasn't stopped kit car companies from resurrecting the mid-engine sports car into various supercar imitations.


Not as visually dysfunctional as the recent Fierri Enzno this latest example comes from UsedFieroParts.com, an authorized distributor and installation partner for North Hollywood's very own Zorba Design, the creator of this Zorba G40 kit.

Car News: Lamborghini Estoque Production Version Details Surface

Estoque, the four-door Lamborghini concept we first saw at the Paris Motor Show, is headed for production in 2011 where its price tag will come in at less than £150,000. More than this, Estoque should offer a number of engine options including diesel.


What it will be though is a car notched above Porsche's upcoming Panamera and the Audi A7, good for a 500bhp-plus, 450lb ft of torque engine, probably the same 5.2-litre V10 currently working its socks off in other Lambo models. Lower down V8s are to be found, alongside a super diesel and possibly even a, hybrid. Lamborghini, like other motor brands, is under tremendous stress to reduce CO2 emissions and therefore takes the engine choice quite seriously, considering its heritage.


When Autocar spoke to Lamborghini R&D boss Maurizio Reggiani, he said Estoque is a unique platform from Lamborghini, contrary to earlier speculation that it will share its underpinnings with the Audi A8. . "If," he said, "you consider the length of the wheelbase and the size of the wheels (the Estoque concept boasts 23 inch rims at the rear), this could not be an A8 floorplan."


"But the opportunity is there to develop a turbocharged, maybe even a diesel engine for Estoque, and since the car could be well-priced and could sell in quite large numbers for us, it's a big chance for us. No Lamborghini will ever emit 120g/km, but still we have to improve our figures and make progress."


"We will never offer our super-sports cars with diesel engines," Reggiani said, "and we will never resort to turbocharging for those cars either; to do either would betray our heritage and customers, and for Murcielago and Gallardo we can make the savings in other ways. More Photos

The powered-up 5.2L direct-injected V10 sends 570 horses to all four wheels via the automaker's e.gear six-speed sequential gearbox.


If you have the itch, head to your Lamborghini dealer with €200,000 -- that's the buy-in fee for the car and parts package. Each race will offer trackside support and parts sales to participants, who get to cool their heels in luxury at the Lamborghini Village that'll be set up at every venue. Lamborghini Estoque 4 door

The Estoque - the name refers to the sword matadors use to kill bulls, is the first four-door to roll out of Sant'Agata since the company built the abominable Portofino for the Frankfurt auto show in 1987. Whereas the Porotfino looked like a Chrysler with scissor doors, the Estoque looks like a Murcielago or Reventon with four doors.


It's all sharp angles and long lines, coming in at almost 17 feet long. Those 23-inch wheels are nearly 10 feet apart. Unlike the Gallardo and Murcielago, the all-wheel-drive Estoque carries its engine just behind the front axle. Lamborghini claims the car's weight distribution approaches 50-50, providing "unparalleled agility and handling precision."

So what about that engine? Sant'Agata says "a range of drivelines is conceivable." Topping the list of possibilities is the 520-horsepower V10 from the Gallardo or a twin-turbo V8 derived from it. But then things get interesting, with Lamborghini saying, "a particularly economical, but nevertheless dynamic, variation would be a V8 with a hybrid module or an extremely high-performance TDI."

Both options not only make sense, they're entirely feasible. Lamborghini is owned by Audi, which is actively pursuing hybrid drivetrains in vehicles like the Q5 SUV and the A1 concept it's bringing to Paris. Audi also has loads of experience with diesels, dominating LeMans with the R10 racer and wowing the crowd in Detroit with the 500-horsepower R8 TDI.


Winkelmann says the Estoque is a running prototype and the company could sell 2,000 to 3,000 of them if it goes into production in 2010. That would double the number of cars Lamborghini sold last year and let it compete against the Aston Martin Rapide and Porsche Panamera. Which, by the way, may come with a hybrid drivetrain.

Lamborghini Donates Gallardo LP560-4 to Italian Police

Replacing the 2004 Gallardo that’s seen 87,000 miles of patrol duty and emergency medial transport in and around Rome, the LP560-4 Polizia goes into service immediately with the Lazio Highway Police Department.
The distinctive, “blu Polizia” paint job is accented by white stripes that follow the contours of the Gallardo’s body, and the roof lights are specially designed to take the car’s speed capability into account.


On the one hand, it’s a good way to ensure that drivers toe the line on Italian roads. On the other, some people might just intentionally flaunt the law in central and Southern Italy just to get a closer look at the new Gallardo LP560-4 Polizia. The police-prepped Gallardo was recently donated to the Italian State Police at the Viminale Palace.


The 560-horsepower, 203-mph supercar serves as more than just a visible tool for deterring speeders. It’s a fully functional squad car, with radio, holster, cardiac defibrillator and other safety equipment. The police Gallardo is equipped with a state-of-the-art onboard video unit called the “Proof Video Data System.”


An in-car camera is linked with a GPS receiver that can transmit images and information on the Gallardo LP560-4 Polizia’s location to the nearest police station, as well as accurately calculating the speed of the vehicle that’s being pursued. Stolen-car and other criminal information can be transmitted quickly and efficiently. Want to argue that you’re innocent? The “Proof Video Data System” features a portable screen on which an officer can show you exactly why you’re being cited.


The Gallardo LP560-4 Polizia is the third Gallardo police car. The first two have clocked 87,000 and 65,000 miles respectively to date, and have been remarkably reliable with no reported service visits other than routine maintenance.


In addition to running down speeders, the Gallardo LP560-4 Polizia can be used for emergency medical transport. The car’s front luggage compartment has been fitted with a refrigeration unit, allowing it to carry donor organs from hospital to hospital with extreme urgency.
